Carl Savage said the 3d Colorado Select 2017 squad began to realize what it was playing for after an early pool play tie at Dick’s Sports Goods Park in the 2014 World Lacrosse Festivals.
3d Select soon began to dominate and then claimed the U15 championship Tuesday by defeating 212 Lacrosse (UT), 12-7. The tournament was held at Dick’s in Commerce City as part of the FIL World Championship.
Meanwhile, in the U13 tourney, MadLax (VA) downed NJ South, 8-6, for the crown.
Savage, an attackman from Cherry Creek (CO) and was one of 3d’s top scorers, said 3d’s 10-10 deadlock with TNT Red (Texas) was a wake-up call. 3d later handed TNT a 15-1 defeat in the Round of 16 playoffs and advanced to the finals with a 17-1 thumping of Mass Bay (MA) and a 16-5 win over Denver Elite.
“Throughout the tournament we started to realize what we were playing for,” said Savage, who had two goals and six assists in the title game. “There weren’t many recruiters there; this was more for a (world) title.
“After we started to step our game up on Day 2 and Day 3 we realized this was something we really wanted. (The tie) opened our eyes.”
3d did have a slight home field advantage.
“We play at Dick’s a lot and every time we win there it’s more special than the time before,” said Savage. “It was an awesome experience going out there.”
Savage’s family has been hosting Team Scotland. He also has enjoyed watching some of the Men’s World Championship games.
“It’s been awesome going to see the games and their warmups and their rituals,” he said. “Just going to see the games and relating to the attackmen, it helps my game to see how creative they are.”
MadLax won its U13 crown after advancing to the finals with a 5-4 win over Denver Elite and a 13-5 conquest of 3d Select 2019. NJ South toppled Colorado Wild, 12-4, in the semis.
