Reaction from players that shined at the Roanoke College Winter Showcase

SALEM, Va. – James Mahan said he came to the Roanoke College Winter Showcase with several key goals – and he was pleased to say he met each one.

“My goals for this showcase were to play hard, intrigue coaches with my play, and prepare myself for this upcoming spring season,” said Mahan, a 2016 attackman from Salem High (VA) and the Lynchburg Lumberjacks. “I feel I reached these goals to the best of my ability.”

Mahan was one of about 100 players from the East Coast to compete at the event, which was held Saturday and Sunday at Roanoke College. The showcase featured showcase games, position-based and strength talks, brief instructional clinics, and an admissions information session.

Mahan also answered these questions:

What were your goals coming to this event and do you feel you reached them?:
Mahan:
“My goals for this showcase were to play hard, intrigue coaches with my play, and prepare myself for this upcoming spring season. I feel I reached these goals to the best of my ability.”

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?:
Mahan:
“The level of competition was pretty high. I had to play loose and not worry about making mistakes.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into this spring season?
Mahan:
“I learned that there is always somebody better than you and I need to step up my game so we can be successful this year.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Mahan:
“I’m looking for a small school which has a tight knit lacrosse program that encourages me to be as successful as possible in my academics and athletics.”

What can you offer a college program?
Mahan:
“I feel I can bring enthusiasm, a love for the game, and that I will leave nothing on the field day in and day out.”

What were your goals coming to this event and do you feel you reached them?
Donaldson:
“My goal was to play to the best of my ability. Despite the weather, I feel like I played at a very high level. I came into this showcase looking to get recruited and I hope that the process can continue.

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Donaldson:
“I met people from all up and down the East Coast and I’m sure they all played to the best of their ability, but I was confident in my play and that made it easy to perform well.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into this spring season?
Donaldson:
“I learned that I need to have better field awareness and make better usage of dodging from different areas of the field.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Donaldson:
“A small, liberal arts college, with a great academic reputation.”

What can you offer a college program?
Donaldson:
“A love for the game and my passion to play lacrosse.”

What were your goals coming to this event and do you feel you reached them?:
Liebel:
“I came down to Roanoke to play in front of some great D3 programs to showcase my skills and show them what I had to offer. I feel I accomplished this goal pretty well.”

How was the level of competition and how did you adjust your game?
Liebel:
“There were some good players out there this weekend and it was great to see how I could play against some high level players.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into this spring season?
Liebel:
“It was really good to play against kids that could utilize both right and left hand in their play, so going against kids like that will help me a lot in my spring season.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Liebel:
“I’m looking for solid sized school, but nothing too big. It should be a good lacrosse program with strong academics.”

What can you offer a college program?
Liebel:
“I feel that I can bring speed, size, and good decision making to a team.”

What were your goals coming to this event and do you feel you reached them?
Bane:
“My goals were to just play as hard as I could and as best as I could.”

What did you learn that you can take with you into this spring season?
Bane:
“Probably to be aggressive when there is a ground ball.”

What type of college are you looking for?
Bane:
“I’m looking for a college that has my specific major and isn’t in a big city type environment. For example, Roanoke is perfect location and everything and also a college that isn’t too far away from home [in Warrenton, VA].”

What can you offer a college program?
Bane:
“I can bring heart, hustle, and dedication. I’m always up for learning and trying new things and playing at the next level is definitely one of those things that I want to do.”
