The girls’ lacrosse season saw its first games between ranked teams today.

In Washington D.C., Bishop Ireton (VA), the No. 4 team in the STEPS Lacrosse North America Rankings, toppled Georgetown Visitation, 11-9.HS Roundup

Meanwhile, Francesca Whitehurst (Georgetown) had five goals, an assist and six draw controls to lead No. 16 Roland Park past No. 14 Archbishop Spalding, 16-10, in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association battle. (A full article is coming on this game Wednesday.)

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals broke a 9-9 tie late in the game on a goal by defensive middie Kaitlin Luzik (Virginia) and then stalled much of the rest of the clock away. Kelly Larkin, a 2016 committed to Navy, led the team with three goals and two assists and Kelly Mathews (Boston University) had three goals. while Kayla Duperrouzel had a pair of goals and four draw controls.

Bishop Ireton led, 6-1, after 10 minutes in the first half, but saw Visitation pull within 7-6 before the half and later tie the game, 8-8, and 9-9.

“They did a nice job of fighting back and getting the momentum in the second half,” said Bishop Ireton coach Rick Sofield. “In crunch time we made the plays. We stalled the last few minutes and retained possession. We got the ball checked out of our stick with 30 seconds left, but we got it right back. It was our first game, and I was telling the girls we didn’t play our best, but we still found a way to beat a good team.”

Maggie Jackson (Virginia) led the Tigers (1-1) with three goals and Kirsten Swanson (Cal) added two goals and two assists.

Charlotte Sofield (UNC) added a goal and an assist and Luzik also had an assist while freshman Lexi Ledoyen scored once.

No. 8 Severn School 17, Notre Dame Prep 11

Caroline Steele (Maryland) poured in 10 goals to lead the Admirals to a win in their IAAM opener.

Caroline Wiseman scored the game-winner with 7:25 to play to give host St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (VA) a tough 11-10 win over Holy Cross (MD) in a non-league girls’ lacrosse opener Wednesday.

Sophomore Zoe Belodeau (Penn) led the Saints – ranked 6th in the STEPS Lacrosse Girls’ Rankings – with two goals and two assists and two key draw controls down the stretch. Senior Ellie Majure (Duke) added two goals and an assist while junior Eloise Carson (Dartmouth) was a force as the Saints overcame a two-goal deficit.

St. Stephen’s is playing its 40th season under legendary coach Kathy Jenkins, whose team was missing five starters due to injuries. Jenkins’ Saints head to California to play six games – including an incredible three in own day on Saturday at La Costa Canyon, north of San Diego.

The three-game marathon begins at 11:30 a.m. when the Saints face PA’s Episcopal Academy (1-0). At 2:30 SSSA meets La Costa Canyon (3-0) and then nearby rival Torrey Pines (3-0) at 5:30 p.m.

Normally, the Saints have large numbers, although few teams have ever played three times in one day. But Jenkins not only had five starters out Wednesday, but many others are injured and her numbers for varsity and JV have dwindled to just 30. She estimated that she has been without as many as 10 players due to injury in the past week.

“We had to bring up five 8th graders for the game Wednesday,” she said. “It’s been a little bit of a nightmare. Numbers have been a problem. First we had the snow and now all the girls getting hurt. I never had a year like this.”

After the three games Saturday, the Saints go north to San Francisco to play Carondelet on Tuesday, St. Ignatius Prep on Wednesday and Marin Catholic next Thursday.

“Hopefully, California will prepare us,” Jenkins said. “Right now we want to get everyone healthy and back on track. We have some nice young players and I think they will surprise some people.

“It’s hard when people are not 100 percent. We want to build that chemistry on the trip. Hopefully it will be good to be together.”

Episcopal Academy (PA) 7, Hill Academy (Ontario) 6, OT

Julia Hondros scored the game-winner in overtime as host Episcopal Academy opened its season with a win over Hill Academy (2-1).

Hondros led a balanced attack with two goals and an assist while Corinne Zanolli added two goals. Jane Crager contributed a goal, an assist and five draw controls as well as a groundball and a caused turnover and goalie Sydney Gagnon had five saves and two interceptions.

St. Paul’s (MD) 10, Coppell (TX) 3

Despite a brilliant 21-save effort by Jeremy Lim, the Crusaders (No. 11 inthe Epoch Lacrosse Rankings) improved to 2-1 with the win at Coppell (4-2).

Eli Ayer won 13 of 18 face-offs for St. Paul’s and AJ Barretto posted eight saves. Tyler Rockhill led a balanced attack with two goals and Connor Flaig added a goal and an assist.

Arapahoe (CO) 16, Grandview (CO) 9

Brian Wilson collected four goals and two assists and Austin Shindoll added four goals and an assist for the Warriors (3-0).HS Roundup

After falling, 18-5, to mighty McDonogh School on Friday, Milton’s girls’ lacrosse team rebounded with an impressive victory Saturday night.Girls high school

Hannah Davis collected three goals, nine draw controls and three groundballs to spark the Eagles – ranked 13th in the STEPS Lacrosse North America Rankings – to a 13-10 win over No. 9 Vero Beach (FL).

“We had a tough game against McDonogh,” said Milton coach Tim Godby of his five-time defending state champion Eagles. “They were just simply way better than us in all phases. To stay with McDonogh, you have to take advantage of opportunities when you have them and limit mistakes.

“They make you pay for mistakes. Playing a team like this helps us learn what we need to improve on.”

Improve the Eagles did as they handed the Fighting Indians (11-1) their first loss. Milton flashed balance vs. Vero as Emily Velez (2 goals, 1 assist), Taylor Catts (2 goals, 3 GB’s, 2 FTO’s), Claire Smith (1 goal, 1 assist, 9 draws), Jessie Masinko (2 goals, 1 assist, 4 GB’s), Morgan Franklin (4 GB’s, 3 FTO’s), and Lindsey Burton (3 GB’s, 2 draws, 2 FTO’s) led the way and
Shahpar Mirza had 12 saves.

“I’m very proud of our girls for bouncing back from a tough loss against McDonogh to beat a good team like Vero,” said Godby. “We have a lot of respect for their program and what they’ve accomplished and they bring out the best in us.

“We started the game hot by going up 4-0. Our girls were very scrappy on the draws and did a great job getting possession on the 50/50 balls. Vero started scoring some goals but didn’t get closer than three the entire game. The halftime score was 8-4. We extended the lead in the second half to 13-7 and were able to control possession and burn some time off the clock to keep the ball out of Vero’s possession.”

Vero made a late rally, scoring three consecutive goals to cut the lead to 13-10, but Mirza had two big saves to preserve the win.

Cold Spring Harbor (NY) 11, Notre Dame Prep (MD) 9

The Seahawks opened their season in style by downing NDP at the One Love Springfest at St. Paul’s School (MD). The game was one of six played to benefit the One Love Foundation.

The Cold Spring Harbor scoring was led by Ashley Lynch (5g, 2a), Sam Debellis (3g, 2a), Tara Atkinson (2g), Kate Kotowski (4a), Holly Logan (1g, 1a) and Lindsey Willcocks (1a).

Haley Crosson posted 11 saves.

Battlefield High School (VA) 2015 goalie Arion Pierre has made a verbal commitment to play Division II lacrosse at Wingate University.

Arion Pierre ledger:

Arion Pierre

Arion Pierre

High School: Battlefield High School, VA

Graduation Year: 2015

Position: Goalie

College Choice: Wingate University

Club Affiliation: BattleLax

Lacrosse Honors: 2nd Team All-District, 1st Team All-District, 1st Team All Conference-Region, Brine Showcase

What will you major in/study? Criminal Justice/Forensic Science

Why did you choose Wingate? “I’m not promised 4 years of lacrosse and if I were to get hurt, I would be 100% okay with that. I loved the atmosphere at Wingate, they have an active Fellowship of Christian Athletes program, I spent some time with the team, I loved them and the campus was beautiful. I just knew Wingate is where God wanted me to be.”

Outlook for your High School season? “We have speed, a high lacrosse IQ, powerful stick skills and I’m excited to see where this season takes us. I think we’re so use to being big fish in a little pond, dominating our district schedule most of the time. I want to prove that we can be a threat to teams outside our District. It’s like we’re premeditated to get knocked out of the State tournament and I’m looking to change that.”

Thank You: “Thank you, Brian Newell, my first coach, he recruited me to play lacrosse when I was younger, after seeing me play in a basketball game against his daughter and niece. He opened this doorway and if it wasn’t for him this wouldn’t have been possible.

“My team, friends and family are so supportive. Goalie, is a mental position, and it’s good to have them help me keep a clear head during the good and bad games I experience on the field.”

Other schools considered: Radford University, Gardner Webb University, Davis & Elkins College, University of Charleston, Wilkes University, CNU, Campbell University, Slippery Rock University, Tennessee Wesleyan College, Shorter University and Randolph College

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Yet another challenger went down today to the McDonogh School Eagles.

McDonogh’s Savannah Buchanan (left), Elizabeth George

In a matchup of the No. 1 and No. 4 teams in the STEPS Lacrosse Girls’ Rankings, the No. 1 Eagles routed visiting Bishop Ireton (VA), 14-4.

Senior midfielder Elizabeth George scored four goals for McDonogh (11-0 overall), and Savannah Buchanan and Andi Aldave each recorded hat tricks. Junior attack and Naval Academy commit Kelly Larkin scored twice for Bishop Ireton (8-1).

The defending national champ Eagles went on an 8-1 first half run to grab command, extending their national-record winning streak to 123 games. McDonogh’s latest triumph comes on the six-year anniversary of its last loss – a 12-10 decision at home to New York’s Canandaigua Academy.

The Eagles marked it with their best performance of the season. They did it without their top player in Duke recruit Olivia Jenner, who suffered a high ankle sprain in McDonogh’s victory over St. Paul’s School for Girls (MD).

“We rose to the occasion. Losing Liv gave other kids a chance to step up,” said McDonogh coach Chris Robinson. “For whatever reason, we were mentally here today. It’s been such a long grind, everybody’s been taking their best shot at us.”

Added George:”We came in knowing we had to get off to a quick start. We’ve had a lot of competitive games.”

The Eagles began turning the game into a rout over the final 12 minutes of the opening half as George, who will attend Princeton, scored off a free position. Aldave, freshman Julia Hoffman, junior Brindi Griffin and Catie May followed with scores, sending McDonogh into halftime with a 9-2 lead.

With an extra-man advantage to start the second half, the Eagles tacked on a free position strike from Kelsey Cummings and a George finish off a quick flip scoop pass from May, expanding the lead to 11-2 with 23:25 remaining. The final eight minutes was running time after an unassisted tally from Buchanan.

May, a sophomore attack committed to Maryland, finished with a goal and a pair of assists for McDonogh. Brittany Dolan and North Carolina recruit Charlotte Sofield, who the Eagles focused on defensively, each tallied for Ireton.

“Early in the game we weren’t winning draws and they got up on us,” said Bishop Ireton coach Rick Sofield. “We had some good looks.

“The plays we ran were working, we just weren’t finishing. If we finish in those situations we get a little momentum and maybe it’s a different game.”
