NORTH EAST, Md – Trey Lignelli, a 2020 defenseman, knew the competition would be keen from the more experienced players Saturday at the Victory Events Fall Showcase Camp at Calvert Regional Park.
Foru of the players that stood out Saturday in the Victory Events Fall Showcase Camp were (from left) Talon Campbell, 2019, MF, Reservoir/HoCo, MD; Greg Santa-Anna, 2019 ATT/MF, Parkland/Big4HHH, PA; Matthew Scandone, 2019 MF, Allentown Central Catholic/Duke’s LC, PA; Trey Lignelli, 2020 DEF, Boyertown/Black Bear, PA
But the tall and rangy Lignelli, of Boyertown (PA), was one of the defensive standouts and left the event pleased with his play and lessons learned.
“Coming in and being a 2020 I expected tough competition; there were not many younger guys,” said Lignelli, who plays club for Black Bear (PA). “I wanted to prove I had a chance against these guys.”
The event featured elite college instruction from Division I and III coaches, capped by showcase games. More than 40 coaches attended.
“The coaches were focusing on little stuff such as positioning and keeping you stick up,” Lignelli said. “I think I helped my team, I did a lot of clearing, getting the ball to the offense.”
What did Lignelli learn that he can take to the Fall and Spring seasons?
“Little things like stick placement; we also worked on footwork. The big part was working and adjusting your game to the college coaches’ expectations.”
What type of school is Lignelli looking for?
“I am looking for business and a medical school,” he said. “My family has been in the medical field and I am just trying to follow in their footsteps.”
Others who excelled:
Talon Campbell, 2019, MF, Reservoir/HoCo, MD
On the event: “I wanted to run hard all day. I got a lot of groundballs and my shooting percentage was pretty good. I learned a lot about face-offs; I had never faced off before but I had some good success. It (the competition) was pretty good, there were many high-level players, but I played up at Lehigh and was prepared coming in.
On his college preference: “I want to go to an Engineering school. D1 is the goal but anything is acceptable. I need to get into the weight-room.”
Matthew Scandone, 2019 MF, Allentown Central Catholic/Duke’s LC, PA
On the event: “My goals coming in were getting exposure and to bring my game to the next level. I thought it went well; my dodging was good and I worked well with my teammates.”
On what he learned: “I learned to shoot toward the goal and tips on dodging. Also, I learned a lot about face-offs – which I was not a big fan of.”
On his college preferences: “I am looking for a business school; you can do so much with a business degree.”
Greg Santa-Anna, 2019 ATT/MF, Parkland/Big4HHH, PA
Maximo Eriksson, 2019 LSM, St. Thomas Aquinas/Florida Xtreme
On the event: “I think I played well; I just wanted to get a lot of exposure and learn as much as I can from the college coaches. I think our team played well as a whole.”
On what he learned: “I think I learned some new dodges from behind X; have some new moves. I am looking for a good business school, it doesn’t matter if it’s city or rural. We have big expectations for the 2018 season; we are shooting for a state championship.”
Maximo Eriksson, 2019 LSM, St. Thomas Aquinas/Florida Xtreme
On the event: “The main reason I came up was to check out the competition up North. I thought I did pretty well. Once you get the handle of how a player plays – what hand they use – you understand how to approach them.”
On what he learned: “The coaches emphasized how to approach a player through placement and setting your feet. I really took it to heart from these coaches. I am looking at business schools; any school with good academics.”
“On his college preferences: “I would prefer a D1 school, but when everything comes together if the competition is good, it doesn’t matter. It’s the academics are what set you past college.
Brandon Smith, 2018 MF, Douglas Freeman/C2C, VA
Brandon Smith, 2018 MF, Douglas Freeman/C2C, VA
On the event: “My main goals were to get noticed. I came up here thinking it would be a good event and it turned out being a great event for me. Today, I felt I was dodging well; the attackmen were in the right spot and I was feeding or they were giving me room to score – we all got along somehow. We all respected each other and amazingly through only two games we got to know each other.”
On what he learned: “One coach stressed about getting your hands high and back and away to really create a lot of torque when you shoot. That’s my MO for playing lacrosse, I am a big right-handed shooter, who is fast and likes to play physical. Another coach helped me on defense by getting my feet set and showing me how to approach people that might be shiftier than I am by using my speed sand strength.”

DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. – More than 180 coaches attended the NXT Philly Showcase and Philly Freshman Showcase Saturday, capped today by the Philly Invitational. Below is reaction from the MVPs and King of the X champions from Saturday’s showcase.
2021 MVP and King of X champion Alec Vaccaro of Culver Academy/True Lacrosse
One player, 2021 face-off/midfielder Alex Vaccaro of Culver Military Academy (IN) and True Lacrosse (IL), claimed both the 2021 MVP and King of the X titles. Vaccaro said he wanted to show his all-around versatility.
“I really just wanted to focus on showcasing my overall athleticism, not just taking faceoffs but playing offense and defense and contributing to the team and showing coaches I am more than a faceoff guy,” he said. “A lot of it (success) today was doing well on groundballs, and I felt that was monumental to my success. Obviously, if you can’t pick up the ball your chances of getting the faceoff are a lot less. ”
“The competition was great; we had a really great group of face off guys so it was fun to go against old buddies and meet some new faces.”
2020 MVP Ryan Mackenzie of Christian Brothers/Upstate with Director Brett Manney
Vaccaro said the elite talent helped him raise his game. “I think just to have a lot of confidence in my teammates and relying on them to be there to get groundballs when needed was big. I just wanted to contribute to the team.”
2020 MVP Ryan Mackenzie, MF, Christian Brothers, Upstate (NY)
On the event: “My goal coming in today was to work hard, and play team ball and it worked out great. The competition as great and it raised my level. To have kids so good it made me work hard and it pushed me.”
On the All-Star Game: “there was terrific talent. It was unreal; a heck of a game. I would say I learned that these events are meant to be 1-on-1 events, but you always share the ball and help your teammates.”
2019 MVP, ATT Kevin Pimental, Chaminade, LI Express (NY)
2019 MVP Kevin Pimental of Chaminade and the LI Express
On the event: “I am late on the whole recruiting thing. This was the best opportunity I had all fall to show myself. I was less than 6-foot last year and I am 6-1 now and I have gotten stronger. The competition was the best I had all fall; every defenseman was very good and it was a really good experience. Our team played pretty well and we had a pretty good faceoff man who got us the ball a lot. I tried to make the best of my opportunities; don’t try to do too much and not do too little and it worked out well.”
On what he learned about his game: “Sometimes I forced it, but I have to keep working on my weaknesses.”
2019/2020 King of X Champion and All-Star Matthew DeSouza, Oakton/Top Caliber (VA)
2019 King of the X champion Matt DeSouza of Oakton and Top Caliber
Dealing with the rainy weather in the morning session: “On the turf fields it wasn’t much of a factor, but on the muddy fields it was kind of hard to pop the ball out because the ball got stuck in the mud. I couldn’t get any leverage; other than that it was not too bad, it kept me awake. I think I warmed up from my first game and I did pretty well and then got better throughout the day.”
On the King of the X competition: “I just took a deep breath and didn’t let anything get to my head. I just focused on winning the clamp. I would just change it up a little bit; if something was not working I would punch harder or rotate more. My goal was to come out with some highlight material and I ended up winning the championship.”
All-Star Collin Loughead, 2019 DEF, Episcopal Academy/NXT LC (PA) On the Fab All-Star game: “Coming in one of my goals was to make the All-Star team so I was happy with that. Once we got to the All-Star Game everybody stepped it up. I was a little tired by then, but on turf I had footing and it was easy to step it up.”
2019 All-Star DEF Collin Loughead of Episcopal Academy and NXT LC
On the morning session: “In the second and third game it was super slippery on the grass from the rain, but I managed to hold kids back and keep my footing. You come here and there are kids from California, Georgia, Texas, California … it’s a great experience to play kids from all over.”
On what he learned about his game: “Just always work hard. If a ball is going out, you never jog. You sprint after it.”

Representing Canada in the Brogden Cup is Team Ontario, a provincial team featuring the top players selected from tryouts conducted by the Ontario Lacrosse Association. It is naturally a much-anticipated event for Canadian lacrosse enthusiasts. “Any time the US and Canada play lacrosse, the games are competitive,” said Stan Cockerton, a US and Canadian Hall of Fame inductee and Past President of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL). “I would not expect anything different this year.”
U15 boys from Canada and the United States will play a friendly competition in conjunction with the Brogden Cup. Local players from the State of Florida will also play exhibition games against teams from the United States and Canada.
