The inaugural I-95 Cup, a face-off team tournament involving four major Mid-Atlantic regions, will be held Feb. 13 at Maple Zone Sports Institute in Garnet Valley, PA.
The event, co-hosted by the Philly Faceoff League and the Face-Off Academy, will feature elite 10-man face-off team teams from Philly, Maryland/DC/Virginia, New York and New Jersey.
The I-95 Cup is not your ordinary face-off tournament. It’s the ultimate challenge to see which AREA of the country has the most talented face-off midfielders. The teams will feature its 10 top face-off specialists in an intense, never before seen style tournament.
Rosters for the tourney will be released next week.
The Philadelphia team was chosen by Philly Face-Off League co-founders John Bodnar and Mike Dolente and Mike Gurenlian of the Philly FOA.
Faceoff Academy directors Greg Gurenlian (New York), Chris Mattes (Maryland/DC/Virginia), and Jerry Ragonese (New Jersey) are the head coaches of their respective regions.
Greg Gurenlian – a Springfield-Delco and Penn State graduate who is a perennial MLL All-Star and the face-off specialist on the US National team – runs a daily face-off combine in New York City, Mattes runs his in Maryland, and Ragonese in New Jersey.
How is this tournament going to work?
Each team will have to play each other once in order to determine playoff seedings. When a matchup between two regions has started, it’s a 10 round best of 7 face-offs. At the start of each round, there will be a coin toss. The losing team has to send out their first face-off guy. This gives the other team the opportunity to see who they are sending, and the coach of that team will choose who will face him.
For example, New York is playing Philadelphia in the first round of the day. New York loses the coin toss and therefore has to send out their first face-off guy. Philadelphia sees who they are sending and sends out somebody who they feel is a strong favorite to win. Let’s say the New York player pulls the upset and wins his best of 7 with a score of 4-2. Because the NY player won, he is automatically awarded 3 extra points. Therefore the final score is 7-2. This score then gets reported to the scorekeeper, and Philly then has to send out its next player for the second matchup. Whoever loses that next matchup will have to send out the next player, and vice-versa until all 10 players have faced each other. Whatever team has the most points at the end of the 10 face-off battles wins.
This format continues until every team has played every team. After all 3 rounds, the total points that each team scored in every matchup will be counted and the team with the most points will be the #1 seed. In the playoffs, the #1 seed will play the #4 seed, and the #2 seed will play the #3. The winners will play in the championship and the losers will fight for 3rd place.
Again, this is NOT an individual tournament; it’s all about winning for your AREA. This is strictly bragging rights for a whole year until next years I-95 Cup!

Following a series of four training camps over eight months, US Lacrosse and head coach Nick Myers have announced the 25-man final roster for the 2016 U.S. Men’s National Under-19 Team that will travel to the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship, July 7-16 in Coquitlam, British Columbia.
The 25 players were selected from a 30-man squad that attended Team USA training camps in November (Columbus, Ohio) and January (Bradenton, Fla.). The 30 players were originally narrowed from a pool of 51 athletes that attended an August training camp in Baltimore, Md., following a 105-player tryout in June, also in Baltimore. Two of the 25 will be named alternates in the lead-up to the World Championship, at which point 23 players will be eligible to compete for Team USA.

2014 and 2015 WAVELAX Top 22
2015 All-Star Teams – MVP Towson, Maryland Showcase, NOVA Laxfest
What will you major in/study? “I’d like to combine my interest in health and fitness with sports marketing or physical therapy.”
Why did you choose Mercer? “I chose Mercer because it was the right fit for me and I liked the coaching staff. Coach (Kyle) Hannan has an up and coming program and great assistant coaches. I would like to help the coaches taker Mercer lacrosse to the next level. Mercer is a smaller sized school and I like the fact that I will get to know my teachers more personally since the classes are small. Also, it has great facilities and Mercer students really support their teams.”
HS team’s outlook for 2016 season? “I’m really looking forward to the season. We have a young team and not a lot of depth. If we keep everyone healthy and play smart lacrosse we could surprise some people. Our defense is young but experienced and our offense has more balance this year. We are looking to improve on face offs and our middies have been working really hard at that.”
Thank You: “I’d like to thank my high school coach, Craig Lunde, and the South Lakes coaching staff, for giving me opportunities to play at a young age and to help lead my team. I’d also like to thank Coach Brad Barber, Team Maryland, for his support, and Coach Rich Klares for his mentorship, recruiting guidance and advice. I can’t leave out my Youth coaches, Coach Kroll, Hildebrand, Curran and Degutis. They instilled in me a love for the game.”
Other schools considered: High Point, Holy Cross, Monmouth, Colgate

GARNET VALLEY, Pa. – The inaugural I95 Cup, perhaps the first team faceoff competition held, launched Saturday with positive feedback.
The event, held at MaplezoneSports Institute in suburban Philly, featured four 10-man teams from four Mid-Atlantic hotbeds, Philly, D.C./Maryland/Virginia (Team DMV), New York City/LI and New Jersey.
Philly vs. DMV- Sean Christman (right, Malvern Prep, Fairfield) vs Brendan Tscherne (St. Paul’s, Air Force)
The intent of the team competition was to discover which region has the best team of face-off specialist, according to creator John Bodner.
He said another benefit was to expose Philadelphia area faceoff specialists to top competition from other lacrosse hotbeds.
Team DMV won the title, edging Philly, 27-24, after Philly had dominated the preliminary round matches.
Bodner, who runs Philly Faceoff and co-sponsored the tourney with Faceoff Academy and Maplezone, and served as the coach for Team Philly, described the event as a success.
Consistent winning in the faceoff circle requires a combination of skill, technique, determination and a mental aspect, he said.
“There are times when you lose the ball in the clamp, but the draw is not over,” he said. “Face offs can also be a total mind game.”
Nick Mcevoy and Justin Shockey, two of Team DMV’s top performers, lauded the tournament’s high level of competition.
Bodner said he received lots of positive feedback from the coaches and participants. He called the tournament a fun way for the players to prepare for the upcoming spring season.
“All these kids are reading about each other on social media,” Bodner said. “As faceoff guys they want to face the best.”
Philly vs. NJ – Dan Fisher (rightSt. Joe’s Prep, Villanova) vs Bill McMenamin (St. Augustine NJ, Fairfield)
Initially, he planned to hold the event last summer. However, that didn’t work out.
Bodner called the Philly Team roster – which included U19 member Christian Feliziani (Episcopal Academy, Ohio State signee) – a solid representation of the region.
“The hardest part of running the team was trying to pick the top 10 face off guys,” Bodner said. “There were 10 more guys who I could have picked.”
Bodner wants to expand the tournament next year. He said coaches in St. Louis, Florida, Canada and California have expressed an interest in participating.
Philly vs. DMV 2 – Brendan Patterson (Council Rock South, Binghamton) vs Palmer Lloyd (James Madison, Rutgers)
