TopLaxRecruits.com has received some fantastic photos of signing day ceremonies during the National Letter of Intent early signing period.

One stood out to us last week from Battlefield HS in Virginia. It was a photo of senior Lauren Cardenas, sitting at a table and her father, Army Colonel Michael Cardenas, proudly standing next to her as he watched her sign her Letter of Intent to Rollins College.

Lauren Cardenas signs with Rollins beside dad, Michael Cardenas

Lauren Cardenas signs with Rollins beside dad, Michael Cardenas

“It felt great to have my dad there and home with me,” said Cardenas, a captain for Battlefield. “I have been very fortunate to have him home a lot lately, especially for my signing.”

Michael Cardenas – who has been in the Army for 23 years – has been stationed overseas in Europe on two separate occasions and has been deployed to the Middle East several times. He said he feels blessed, humble and very proud of his daughter.

“I have been very fortunate to be able to see Lauren play for both her Varsity and Club lacrosse teams,” he said.

The photo was very moving, for it not only was showing that Lauren’s dad was able to be there for her signing day but that it was on Veterans Day. Sometimes lacrosse and real life mesh well together, and this was one of those times.

“I constantly provide words of encouragement and wisdom that focus on trying to inspire Lauren to be the best lacrosse player, teammate, and individual that she can possibly be,” Michael said.

Cardenas fell in love with Rollins the moment she stepped on the beautiful Winter Park, Florida campus. “The head coaches at Rollins made me feel so welcomed and I got along with them immediately. I knew I would fit right in. The program is overall perfect for me,” she said.

It’s apparent that Lauren looks up to her father.

The way he leads men on the battlefield is the same way Lauren leads her team on the Battlefield lacrosse field. Cardenas has taken charge of making sure the team together through captain’s practice and conditioning.

“Our team looks great this year!” she said. “We have a lot of talent and a ton of determination to go far into the season.

“We have some great incoming athletes beginning their high school lacrosse career and they will be a great addition to our team. We have wonderful coaches at Battlefield who constantly motivate us and find ways to make us better athletes. This season will be very successful.”

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. – Nick Rockefeller said hearing his name announced as the 2017 MVP at the 2015 Boys Philly Showcase Saturday at Episcopal Academy caught him off guard.

2017 MVP Nick Rockefeller (Harrison High, LB3 ATL)

2017 MVP Nick Rockefeller (Harrison High, LB3 ATL)

“It really surprised me, and I was excited about that,” said the Harrison (GA) midfielder, who plays for LB3 ATL. “It was one of my ‘far out’ goals.”

Rockefeller was joined as a Morning Session MVP by St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes 2018 midfielder Rainier Lee (Virginia Lacrosse Club).

MVP Interviews:

Nick Rockefeller, 2017, MF, Harrison (GA), LB3 ATL

Did you think you would have a chance to the 2017 MVP award?
Rockefeller:
“I wasn’t expecting to win it. There are so many kids from everywhere. It’s one of the biggest tournaments.”

What goals did you have today and what did you accomplish?
Rockefeller:
“My goals were to make the all-star game and play well. I think I accomplished that.”

How was the competition in the morning games and what did you do to raise your level?
Rockefeller:
“The competition in the morning was very good. It’s weird getting used to new teammates at a recruiting tournament like this. After the first half of the first game, we all started to mesh and play well together. We played well throughout the day.”

What did you learn about your game today that will help you moving forward?
Rockefeller:
“I learned I need to be a pass first-midfielder. I usually try to dodge through double teams. I have to always pass through that, instead.”

What type of college are you looking for, athletically and academically?
Rockefeller:
“I am definitely looking for a Division I school. Academics are more important. I want to go to a school where I can fit in and get playing time. I don’t want to sit on the bench for four years.”

Rainier Lee, MF, 2018, St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes, VA, Virginia Lacrosse Club

2018 MVP Rainier Lee (St. Styephens & St. Agnes (VA), Virginia Lacrosse Club

2018 MVP Rainier Lee (St. Styephens & St. Agnes (VA), Virginia Lacrosse Club

What goals did you have today and what did you accomplish?
Lee:
“I wanted to play as well as I could against some of the best players in the country and have a good time while doing it. I also came into the day with the goal of making the all-star game.”

How was the competition in the morning games and what did you do to raise your level of performance?
Lee:
“The competition was very good. It was really exciting to go up against some really good players who all were playing as hard as they could. I tried to raise my performance by looking to be more opportunistic in transition.”

What did you learn about your game today that will help you moving forward?
Lee:
“I think I learned that I have to play confidently whenever I step onto a lacrosse field.”

What type of college are you looking for, in terms of athletics and academics?
Lee:
“I’m looking for school where I can be pushed to be my best athletically and that will properly prepare me for life after college. I want to study business or engineering in college.”

Did you think you would have a chance to the 2018 MVP award?
Lee:
“The thought honestly hadn’t crossed my mind until I heard my name announced as the MVP.”

Camryn Mann had new goals for the New Year Saturday when she returned to compete in the Frozen 150 girls’ showcase Saturday at the Fredericksburg (VA) Field House.

Victory 4

Rams MVP’s (from left): Arianna Shea (Integrity), Marissa Lagera (Hero’s), Camryn Mann (Storm Elite)

“Last year I competed in the Frozen 150 and I loved it!” said the Walsingham High (VA) 2018 midfielder. “There was a lot of tough competition and college coaches. It’s a great place to get noticed for sure.

“Last year, my goal going into the event was to take that first step in the recruiting process and get some traction from college coaches. This year I came in with different goals because just a couple days before Christmas I committed to play D1 at Arizona State.

Eagles

Eagles MVPs: Alyssa Wright (Hero’s), Morgan Akers (Ulax/Uproar/Revolution), Sam Kreis (Black Dog Lacrosse)

“With that being said the ultimate goal this year was to learn from different coaches and just keep a stick in my hand. After you commit it’s no time to take a break, that’s when the real work begins!”

Mann, of Storm Elite, was one of three MVPs named for the Rams, along with Arianna Shea (Integrity) and Marissa Lagera (Hero’s). Other MVP’s included: Natalie Pugliese (Team United), Nicole Orella (Long Island Yellow Jackets), and Madison Corcoran (Lady Roc) of the Wildcats; Kira Repich (Storm Elite), Kaitlyn Arcari (Capital Lacrosse), and Kathryn Kelley (Dynamite Lacrosse Club) of the Hawks; and Alyssa Wright (Hero’s), Morgan Akers (Ulax/Uproar/Revolution), and Sam Kreis (Black Dog Lacrosse) of the Eagles.

The event, run by Victory Events, began with drills through multiple stations that including man-up/man-down situations, shooting drills, double team defense/getting out of doubles, and techniques for taking the draw. That clinic portion was led by coaches from Villanova, St. Joseph’s, VCU, Navy, and Winthrop.

After that, a Q&A recruiting panel was held for both parents and athletes. In the afternoon, the girls split into four teams and played 7v7 showcase games. Those teams were also coached by the college coaches.

Wildcats MVPs (from left): Natalie Pugliese (Team United), Nicole Orella (Long Island Yellow Jackets), Madison Corcoran (Lady Roc)

Wildcats MVPs (from left): Natalie Pugliese (Team United), Nicole Orella (Long Island Yellow Jackets), Madison Corcoran (Lady Roc)

“Overall, I learned a ton from each of the coaches,” said Mann. “It was pretty much impossible not to learn from such knowledgeable people! One of my weaker points is off ball defense, but after this weekend I feel very confident in that area of my game.”

What went well for Mann?

“To earn MVP honors I did my best to show my strong points, and even if I was working a weaker area of my game, always going 110 percent was the priority,” she said. “My team meshed pretty well.

“It’s always a bit challenging coming onto a field with a bunch of girls you don’t know too well, but communicating with your teammates all over the field is definitely a necessity to be a successful team in this kind of environment. Along with that, really trying to connect with other girls on your team and finding things you have in common with them really helps to make a connection on the field.”

Hawks

Hawks MVPs (from left): Kira Repich (Storm Elite), Kaitlyn Arcari (Capital Lacrosse), Kathryn Kelley (Dynamite Lacrosse Club)

The field featured players from over 25 clubs. represented from states including VA, MD, PA, NY, CO, and MA. Players came from such elite clubs as the Long Island Yellow Jackets, STEPS Elite, Hero’s, T3, Mass Elite, Lady Blue Crabs, Philly Blast and Integrity.

Also winning MVP: Kaitlyn Arcari, 2018 MF/ATT, Bishop O’Connell High School (Capital Orange)

What kind of goals did you have coming into the showcase and did you fulfill them?
Arcari:
“My goal going into the showcase was to get through the entire day giving it my all and hustling for every ball no matter how tired or worn out I was. ‘Keep going and NEVER give up no matter how hard it is’ was my motto.

What went well for you to earn MVP honors?
Arcari:
“I think I played really well because I was having a ton of fun and I received great instruction from my coaches and great support from my teammates. I liked the small and relaxed environment the showcase had. I also put in a lot of work on my own time before the showcase to prepare.

“Just because you may not be (at) the same skill level as everyone there there’s still room for them to improve also. If you practice practice practice you can achieve anything! Don’t be afraid to try new things, it’s how you learn. So get out on the wall! Repetition is key for success! And don’t forget to have fun!”

What did you learn from all the coaching that will help you to get ready for the high school season ?
Arcari:
“I enjoyed working with all the coaches and they all gave me great information but I especially liked the sliding double drill that I did with the VCU coach. I will definitely be able to use the information that I learned in this drill during my high school season.”

How did your team mesh ? What did you have to do to play well together?
Arcari:
“I knew no one going into the showcase but I really enjoyed my team and I think we played really well together as a team. The group of girls made it easy to mesh together because we all had different things to learn and teach one another and we all wanted to get better. Communication was a key part of our success. Throughout the day we got better and better at communicating with each other which resulted in winning team.”
